The course has been conducted by the faculty of the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Center at Bangkok Hospital since 2016. This 3-day Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) endorsed course is designed for physicians (intensivists, surgeons etc.), nurses, perfusionists and other healthcare professionals caring for patients who receive Extracorporeal Life Support. The course is a comprehensive 3-day program that covers various aspects of ECMO management. It includes a combination of simulation and lecture components. The topics are distributed over the three days, starting at 8:00 am and concluding at 5:00 pm each day. During the 27-hour course, participants will spend 7 hours on lectures while the remaining time will be dedicated to small group teaching through water drills and simulation. The lectures will cover various topics related ECMO, such as the components of the ECMO circuit, indications for ECMO, contraindications, patient management while on ECMO, cannulation strategies, physiology, anticoagulation and troubleshooting.
The practical stations in small groups will consist of hands-on sessions, with each session lasting 30 minutes and accommodating 5-6 delegates along with one or two instructors. More than 50% of the course time will be devoted to hands-on training. The water drills and high-fidelity simulations will encompass all ECMO emergencies, providing comprehensive training scenarios. At the end of the course, a skill assessment will be conducted, evaluating technical, cognitive and behavioral aspects. Critical steps will be identified in advance, and reaction times will be recorded.
The course will be held from December 12 - 14, 2023 at the BDMS Simulation Center, Bangkok Hospital Medical Center in Bangkok, Thailand. The maximum number of participants is limited to 18. In additional to the course, the registration fee will cover ELSO’s manual, handout, lunches and coffee breaks.
